 Carrol Jean Taylor, 71, of Holton passed away at 10:45pm, Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus. She was born in Cincinnati on September 7, 1949, the daughter of Cecil and Thelma Byrd Kelly. She was married to Willie Taylor on May 19, 1969 and he preceded her in death on April 4, 2014. Survivors include her companion Ricky Stephens; one daughter Teresa (John) O’Neil of Versailles; one son Kenny Taylor of Bankston, Alabama; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; two brothers Ernie (Ellen) Kelly of Belmont, California, and Arthur Kelly of Napoleon. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Sharon Reese. She was a 1968 graduate of Holton High School and graduated from cosmetology school in Columbus in 1988. Carrol was well known in the Holton community where she operated a beauty shop for over 25 years. She also did hair in shops in Versailles and Seymour. Carrol enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her family said that she remained “in charge” to the very end. She always loved having the kid’s friends at her house and she was known to all of them as “Mammy”. Carrol made and enjoyed her many trips to the Smoky Mountains and wherever she was, she was always good for a laugh. Carrol was a member of the Holton Christian Church. Carrol’s wishes were to be cremated and a celebration of her life will be held at 10am on Saturday, July 31st at the Holton Christian Church with Bro. Bob McCreary and Rev. Dwight Roark officiating. Visitation will begin at 9am. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

 

John M. Busteed, 61, of Madison passed away at 10pm, Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born in Madison on September 6, 1959 the son of Edward and Eula Whisman Busteed. Survivors include his fiancé Lori Eggleston; three sons Ryan (Laura) Busteed and James Busteed both of Dayton, Ohio, and Shawn Busteed of Eaton, Ohio; grandchildren Gabriel Eaton, Brynlee and Cole Busteed; one brother Ron Busteed of Aurora. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Diane Bryant. Mr. Busteed was a 1978 graduate of South Ripley High School. He had owned and operated the Flagpole Liquor Store in Versailles for 40 years. He was also a former employee of UPS and had operated package stores in Dillsboro and Madison. John was a member of the NRA. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 20th at 6pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with visitation beginning at 4pm. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.

 

Charles (Butch) Sidney Allee, 61, of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at his home in Versailles, Indiana. He was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on January 30, 1960, the son of Charles Allee and Gertrude Roberts Allee. He was married to Lisa Lafary on July 21, 1979, and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Dustin (Kristin) Allee of Holton and Dane (Jody) Allee of Versailles; one daughter, Shannon (Kenny) Benham of Versailles; eight sisters, Pat (Kelly) Clark of Chester, Ohio, Roberta (Virgil) Meeker of North Vernon, Nita Hoyt of Columbus, Martha Osborne of Stockdale, Texas, Cindy (Wayne) Vanosdol of Holton, Alice ( Danny) Beach of Holton, Bessie Mullins and Scott Jones of Bloomington, Sue (Harvey) McDougall of Martinsville, Indiana; one brother, Gayle (Mary) Litton of Martinsville; and seven grandchildren, Tyler, Tayler and Allee Benham, Emma Heidt, Ella and Ava Allee and Lane Allee; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters; Betty Wright, Dorothy Litton, Drucilla Gerries, Ilona Hendricks, Karen Barrett and Ruth Large and two brothers; Duard Litton and Jack Mote. Mr. Allee was employed by Sharon Brown Trucking for 17 years and employed by the Carpenters Union for 20 years. His strong work ethic was paired with a love for family and friends and he enjoyed his time with both and spending everyday as a “Papaw.” Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 17, at 2 p.m. at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Boyd officiating and burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 16, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Cliff Hill Cemetery.

 

Frank “Eddie” Antras, 90, of Versailles passed away at 4pm, Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at his home. He was born at Petersburg in Boone County, Kentucky on November 8, 1930 the son of Louie and Mary Lela Block Antras. He was married to Vickie McKinley on June 27, 1953 and his wife of 68 years survives. Other survivors include four sons William Antras of Old Town, Florida, Steve (Anne) Antras of Versailles, Michael (Sherri) Antras of Tullahoma, Tennessee, and Tom (Jennifer) Antras of Spokane, Washington; one daughter Leanna Phillippe of Rising Sun; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandchildren Jacob Daniel and Eric Thomas Antras, son-in-law Jay Phillippe, daughter-in-law Jennifer Antras, his brothers Russell and Louie Antras, and his sisters Ida Antras and Ann Goodpaster.  He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1948 to 1952 and rising to the rank of Sergeant.  For service to his country Ed received the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Stars. Ed retired from the Jefferson Proving Ground in 1987 after working for 35 years as the head of EOD. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had his last deer hunt at age 80 and last turkey hunt at age 83. He was a devoted family man and Gideon and always ready to share his love for the Lord. Ed was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church, Ripley County Gideon Camp, and the Versailles American Legion. He and Vicky also conducted a jail ministry for 20 years. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 19th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the Ripley County Gideon Camp in care of the funeral home.

 

Bro. Irvin L. Hart, 87, of Versailles passed away at 6:20pm, Sunday, July 4, 2021 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. He was born in Martinsville on May 27, 1934 the son of Victor and Ida Mae Pringle Hart. He was married to Pauline Day Hosmer on October 31, 1975 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons Kenton (Sandy) Hart of Gosport and Ricky (Renee) Hart of Versailles; three daughters Lisa (Eddie) McIntosh of New Whiteland, Carma Hart and partner Dan Williams of Martinsville, and Sandra (Robert) Coffman of Knoxville, Tennessee; step-son Rick Hosmer of Madison; step-daughter Diane (Stanley) Ramey of Alexandria; 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lawrence, Paul, Ernest, Loren, and Amos Hart, and his sister Florence Sloan. Mr. Hart was a 1953 graduate of Martinsville High School. He was a former employee of Eli Lilly and was a local independent insurance agent for 55 years operating Hart’s Insurance Agency in Versailles. Irvin was also a minister for 35 years, his latest pastorate being at the New Testament Christian Church in Osgood. He had served as assistant basketball coach and athletic director at the Cincinnati Bible College from 1984 to 1996. Irvin loved to share the Gospel of Christ through his ministry. He also enjoyed following IU basketball, a passion he and son Ricky shared together watching games. Funeral services for Irvin will be on Thursday, July 8th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Tom Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Church of Christ in care of the funeral home.

 

Esther Pauline Geisler was born on July 15, 1927 to Herman Heinrich “Henry” and Leola Louise (Smith) Werner at their home in Golden Corner in Brown Township, Ripley County, near Friendship, Indiana. Esther loved her German heritage and was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean, Indiana where she was baptized on August 14, 1927 and confirmed in faith on May 28, 1939. Esther lived most of her childhood years near Cross Plains, Indiana and attended the one-room schoolhouse, Jolly School, until the 8th grade when the schools consolidated into Cross Plains High School. She attended there until the family moved to Versailles where she attended her last two years and graduated from Versailles High School in 1945. She was then employed for 3 years as a stenographer at Westinghouse in Cincinnati, Ohio, and spent the rest of her life at home as a devoted farm wife and mother. She loved cooking, sewing, cross-stitching, gardening, scrapbooking, serving and quilting for missions with the women at St. Paul Lutheran Church, and involving herself with the Correct Homemakers and 4-H organizations of Ripley County for many years. Esther met the love of her life, Charles Raymond Geisler, when he came to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean with a friend during their high school years and they were married there at Olean on September 18, 1948. They celebrated almost 65 years together as husband and wife until Raymond preceded her in death on June 3, 2013. They had 4 children: sons William David “Billy,” Richard Wayne, daughter Melissa Jane, & John Raymond Geisler. Esther was also preceded in death by her parents, her sons Billy and Richard, her grandsons Joe & Brian Geisler, her three brothers: Norman Charles Frederick, Herman “Duke” Jr. and Estol Martin “PeeWee” Werner, her sisters-in-law Eleanor Whitaker, Maxine Werner, and Marie Werner, and brother-in-law Roy Whitaker, and many aunts & uncles and cousins. Esther will be sadly missed by her loving family: Melissa (Steve) Spencer, John (Lisa) Geisler, and Mrs. Mary Ann Geisler, grandchildren: Jennifer Spencer, Dan (Liz) Geisler, Jeff (Kelly) Spencer, Jodie (Josh) Spencer, Jessica (Nathan) Lehman, Kevin & Cody Geisler and great-grandchildren Katie Spencer, Forrest & Penelope Spencer, Cooper, Cohen, & Quinn Spencer, Connor, Carson, & Charlie Lehman, and Robbie & Freddie Geisler, and sister-in-law Mrs. Katie Werner, along with several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles on Monday, July 5, 2021 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm and the funeral will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at 11:00am with Rev. Sue Socha officiating and graveside services following in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Olean General Fund.

 

Doris Ann Tebbing Droege was born on March 31, 1935 to Ernest and Edna (Klusman) Thomas in Cross Plains, Indiana.  She was baptized on April 14, 1935 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dewberry.  Doris was confirmed in faith on March 21, 1948 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dewberry.  She graduated from Cross Plains High School in 1953.  Two years later, she married Ray Francis Tebbing on June 4, 1955.  Doris and Ray had three children:  Cheryl (Tebbing-Heckman), Cathy (Meyer), and Randy Tebbing and in 1980 added Jenny (Martinez). Doris and Ray were married until Ray’s death on August 21, 1996.   Doris worked as a bookkeeper at Halcomb Home Center in Versailles and also at Custom Conveyors in Greensburg, IN.  On June 12, 1999, Doris married Karl Droege.  They were married until his death on March 30, 2018.  Doris will be missed by her loving family:  Cheryl Tebbing Heckman (Rodney), Cathy Meyer (Ed), Randy Tebbing (Toni), and Jenny G. Martinez (Larry); her stepdaughter, Vicky Caviness; and her grandchildren: Ryan Hinojosa (Jessica), Krista Jones (Andrew), Jenna Green (Preston), Jared Meyer, Mikaela Tebbing, and Neil Meyer.   Doris enjoyed shopping, gardening, and playing the organ.   She was preceded in death by her parents Ernest William Fredrick Thomas and Edna (Klusman) Thomas; her brother, Harold Thomas; her husbands Ray Francis Tebbing and Karl Droege; and her stepson, Mike Droege. Visitation will be at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles on Thursday, July 1st, 2021, from 4:30pm to 7:30pm and the funeral will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Olean on Friday, July 2nd, 2021 at 11:00am with Rev. Sue Socha officiating. Memorials can be made to St. Peter’s Cemetery Fund or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Improvement Fund in care of the funeral home.  

 

Dorothy F. Abplanalp, 90, of Napoleon passed away at 1:30am, Thursday, June 24, 2021 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born near Osgood on May 3, 1931 the daughter of Raymond and Jennie Follmer Butt. She was married to Delbert Abplanalp on February 6, 1954 and her husband of 67 years survives. Other survivors include two sons, Roger (Dee) Abplanalp of Osgood and Larry (Brenda) Abplanalp of Napoleon; one daughter Peggy Abplanalp of Indianapolis; two grandchildren Joe (Linsey) Abplanalp of Greensburg and Chelsea Abplanalp of Aurora; one great-grandson Xander Abplanalp; one brother Ray (Doris) Butt of Batesville;  Mrs. Abplanalp was a 1949 graduate of Napoleon High School. Her working career spanned several years where she had employment with Griner’s Grocery in Napoleon, Dr. George S. Row in Osgood, and the Napoleon Lumber Company. Dorothy gave much time back to the community which involved her being secretary of the Brunner-Lamb School District Flower Club, cataloging burials for the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Napoleon, genealogist for the Bultman Reunion, and placing flags for the veteran graves at St. John Cemetery. Her cherry pie was legendary and she enjoyed preparing birthday and holiday meals for her family. She also enjoyed reading and gardening. Dorothy was a lifetime member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Napoleon where she taught Sunday school for several years. She attended the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Smyrna and was also a member of the Ripley County Historical Society and the Osgood Historical Museum. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 28th at 3pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Doug Brougher officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Napoleon. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or the St. John Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Dorothy J. Holton, 84, of Dillsboro passed away at 3:50am, Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood, Kentucky. She was born near Cross Plains on October 2, 1936, the daughter of James and Alma Christman Hankins. She was married to Gordon Holton and he preceded her in death on April 24, 1999. Survivors include four sons Joseph D. Cheatham of Versailles, Kenneth Cheatham of Dillsboro, Robert (Bonnie) Cheatham of Moores Hill, and Jon (Jody) Holton of Milan; one daughter Shirley (Ricky) Thomas of Waverly, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister Judy (Omer) Wilson of Holton. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister Myrle Wood, and her brothers Dale and Roy Hankins. Mrs. Holton was a 1954 graduate of Cross Plains High School. She was a former employee of Wood Farm and Industrial Supply in Versailles. She enjoyed reading, attending church, her family, working crossword puzzles, and tending her flowers. Dorothy was a member of the Hope Baptist Church in Dillsboro. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 28th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Tom Holt officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery in Cross Plains. Visitation will also be on Monday beginning at 10am. Memorials may be given to the Hope Baptist Church or the Salem Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Donald P. Ester, 91 of Milan passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born April 25, 1930 on Ester Ridge in Dearborn County, the son of the late Alma (Huff) Ester and Edward Ester. Don began working at an early age at Seagrams and then enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Texas, where he served for 4 years. When Don returned to Milan he worked for Seagrams where he was employed for 47 years. He met Rita Jo Volz and they married on June 13, 1959 and they had just celebrated their 62nd anniversary. They raised 4 children; Gretchen (Richard) Hooker, Heidi (d. Bruce) Becker of Milan, Eric (Bev) Ester of Dillsboro, Don Paul (Renae Johnson) of Milan, Grandchildren Adam (Katie) Hooker, Alex (Jodie) Hooker, Johnathan Becker, Tyler Ester, Erica (Aaron) Mathes, Sara Ester (Joshua), Taylor Ester, Abigail Ester (Matt), Gabby Ester (Zach), Olivia Ester (Charles). great-grandchildren Caroline Hooker, Declan Hooker, Lane Hooker, Laramie Hooker, Cash Mathes, Mia Mathes, Asher Brewer and Lyric Storm. Don and Rita enjoyed many years of camping and traveling the United States in their motor home with friends and family. When the kids were young they spent most weekends in the summer camping with a group of friends traveling throughout Indiana. After retirement they were able to travel longer trips to Niagara Falls, Wisconsin, out west, and many more wonderful places. They then purchased a home in Florida and began spending the winters in Sarasota and now Bradenton, Florida. Don enjoyed gardening, fishing, golfing, working out at the gym and swimming. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Melvin, Floyd, Lillian Rodgers, Doris Weitlesbach, and Edward Jr. Ester. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.  Funeral Mass will be held at St. Charles Catholic Church in Milan, Friday, June 25 at 10:00am with burial in the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Charles Cemetery Fund or the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in care of the funeral home.

 

Omer L. Palmer, 82, of Versailles passed away at 3:20pm, Saturday, June 19, 2021 at his home. He was born in Osgood on July 7, 1938 the son of Claude Sr. and Edith Rayner Palmer. He was married to Virginia Wagner on June 5, 1976 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Travis (Andrea) Palmer of Versailles; three daughters Becky (Mark) Wooley of New Castle, New Hampshire, Sandy (Todd) Guthrie of Versailles, and Beth (David) May of Rexville; daughter-in-law April Palmer of Rochester, New Hampshire; 17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Roger, his brothers William, Ronald, and Claude Palmer, Jr., and his sisters Bonnie Palmer, Phyllis Mulford, and Waunetta Zaenglein. Mr. Palmer was a veteran of the US Air Force where he served as an Airman and was Honorably Discharged o July 28, 1958. Omer was a former resident of South Berwick, Maine where he served on the fire department’s water rescue team. He was a 25 year employee and retired from Hill-Rom in Batesville where he worked in welding. In his spare time Omer coached little league at Holton and enjoyed rabbit hunting, horseback riding, camping, and spending time with his family. He had also spent many years training horses for folks in the Holton community involved in harness racing. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 26th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Omer’s nephew Rev. Steve Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will also be on Saturday beginning at 10am. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Fire Department in care of the funeral home.

 

Ralph R. Pickett, 87, of Holton passed away at 10:45am, Sunday, June 20, 2021 at his home. He was born in Holton on September 13, 1933 the son of Klell and Viola Ensinger Pickett. He was married to Lila Chandler and she preceded him in death on June 27, 1993. Survivors include three sons Greg Pickett and Mark Pickett both of Holton, and David Pickett of Butlerville; two daughters Denise (Charlie) Biddinger of Westport and Julie (Jay) Lambert of Marion, Illinois; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his brother Delbert. Mr. Pickett was a Veteran of the Korean War where he served in the US Air Force as an Airman First Class with the 1st Field Maintenance Squadron. For service to his country Ralph received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In civilian life Ralph was employed with the Forest Hyatt Sawmill at Holton and retired from Cummins in Columbus after 29 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and the loyal companionship of his dog Spike. Ralph was a member of the Holton Christian Church and a former member of the Holton Fire Department. He had also served on the Holton Town Board. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 23rd at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Bob McCreary of the Holton Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will also be on Wednesday beginning at 9am at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Holton Cemetery or Holton Christian Church in care of the funeral home.

 

William R. Mathews, 72, of Cross Plains passed away at 11pm, Thursday, June 17, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital in Lawrenceburg. He was born at the Whitlatch Clinic in Milan on May 29, 1949 the son of William and Virginia (Peters) Mathews. He was married to Carolyn Gardner on December 11, 1971 and his wife of 49 years survives. Other survivors include one son Michael (Anna) Mathews of Greenwood, and two grandchildren Graham William and Lainey. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kenny. Mr. Mathews attended school in Cross Plains and was a 1967 graduate of South Ripley High School. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he was stationed in Germany testing tanks. In civilian life Bill worked as a machinist for Cummins for 31 years. Upon retirement he graduated from Missouri Auction School and became a license auctioneer.  He has conducted many sales throughout the county. Bill was an accomplished mechanic, having built pulling tractors, a 1955 Chevy, and a 1934 Plymouth.  As an avid IU basketball fan, Bill rarely missed watching a game. Bill was a member of the Cross Plains United Methodist Church and the Brown Township American Legion. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 24th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Randy Thieman officiating. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery at Cross Plains with military honors by the Brown Township American Legion. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm. Lisa Kay Riemen, 53, of Covington, Kentucky passed away at 1:35am, Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood. She was born in Lawrenceburg on September 19, 1967 the daughter of Dave and Rita Roy Williams. Survivors include her significant other Ray Snedicor of Covington; one son Travis (Alicia) Pope of Covington; her parents Dave and Rita Williams of Shelbyville; three grandchildren Chandler, Declan, and Barrett; her sister Sandra (Greg) Bright of Indianapolis; her nephew David Bright, and her aunt Sheila (Ron) Banks of Carrolton, Kentucky. Ms. Riemen was a 1985 graduate of Greenfield Central High School and received her Associate’s Degree from Thomas Moore College. She was a 21 year employee of R. R. Donnelly Printing and was currently working as a sales coordinator and account specialist for Pitney Bowes in Hebron, Kentucky. Lisa’s grandchildren were the light of her life and she cherished her time with them. Lisa was a member of the Seven Hills Church in Florence, Kentucky. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 19th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Stephen Palmer officiating. Robert A. Briggs, 97, of Versailles passed away at 3:30pm, Friday, June 11, 2021 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born near Vevay on June 23, 1923 the son of Maurice and Millecent Clemens Briggs. He was married to Imogene Willoughby Morton on September 24, 1993 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons Denny (Sue) and Greg (Lisa) Briggs both of Vevay; one daughter Jennifer Sparks of Indianapolis; three step-daughters Linda Kelso, Robin Morton, and Debbie (Kevin) Mack all of Versailles; step-son Mark (Lisa) Morton of Rising Sun; 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ken, and his sister Shirley Hart. Mr. Briggs was a 1941 graduate of Vevay High School. He was a Marine Veteran of WWII where he served as an aircraft mechanic, rising to the rank of Sergeant. For service to his country Bob received the Good Conduct Medal. In civilian life Bob attended the Indianapolis Business College and worked at Allisons in Indianapolis. He spent the majority of his working career as a dairy farmer in Switzerland County and also worked as an ABS technician for 42 years. Bob had the privilege of making the veteran Honor Flight to Washington, DC and also the honor of being able to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. He also enjoyed being part of the McDonald’s coffee club in Versailles, following IU basketball, the Reds, and working the farm with his sons. Bob was a member of the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held at 7pm on Monday, June 21st at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Visitation will also be on Monday beginning at 5pm. Military honors will be conducted by the Versailles American Legion.  Memorials may be given to Rescue 69 or the Versailles American Legion in care of the funeral home.

 

Mary Ellen Thieman, 92, of Versailles passed away at 6:10pm, Friday, June 4, 2021 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. She was born near Barwick in Breathitt County, Kentucky on September 4, 1928 the daughter of Kelly and Erasta Stidham Day. She was married to Omer Thieman on June 5, 1948 and he preceded her in death on September 2, 1983. Survivors include one son Randy (Rhonda) Thieman of Cross Plains; one daughter Earlene Schwanholt of Columbus; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother Tom (Lorine) Day of Versailles; two sisters Pruda Setser and Pauline (Irvin) Hart both of Versailles. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Harlan, Joe, and Dale Day, and her sister Lillie Mae Hisle. Mrs. Thieman was a 1947 graduate of Cross Plains High School. She had worked for several years as a cook at the Cross Plains school and also as a custodian for the South Ripley schools, retiring in 2000. She enjoyed crocheting as well as spending time with her large family. Mary Ellen was a member of the Versailles Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 11th at 10:30am at the Versailles Church of Christ with Mary Ellen’s son Randy officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 9:30am until time of services Friday at the church. Dr. James A. Drummond, 79, of New Palestine, formerly of Osgood and Milan, passed away at 3:37pm, Wednesday, June 2, 2021 in his home. He was born in Ft. Wayne on October 6, 1941 the son of Arthur and Georgia Fern (Skelton) Drummond. He was married to Sharon Shaner, a 1965 graduate of the Indiana University School of Nursing, on September 11, 1965. Sharon, his wife and trusted partner of 55 years survives him. Other survivors include one daughter Tamara (William) Butler of Shelbyville; one son Andrew (Karen) Drummond of Carmel Valley, California; two grandchildren May Drummond and Hannah Butler.

Dr. Drummond was a 1959 graduate of Ft. Wayne South High School and a 1966 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine. He served his internship in Lexington, Kentucky in 1967 at Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Drummond and Sharon then enrolled in the Lexington Theological Seminary later that year. Under the supervision of the United Christian Missionary Society, the couple began a mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire). While in Congo, Dr. Drummond and his wife worked in the town of Boende at the local hospital. The Drummonds completed their Master of Divinity degrees in 1970, just prior to the end of their two-year mission.

Upon returning home, Dr. Drummond began his four-year pathology residency in Canton, Ohio. He became board certified in clinical and anatomical pathology and served as a pathologist at The Medical Foundation in South Bend until 1979. At that time, Dr. Drummond and Sharon decided to relocate to Milan, in order to take over the medical practice of Dr. Warn, who was retiring. They ultimately expanded their practice to include Osgood as well. The couple worked every day, as doctor and nurse practitioner, until their retirement on December 20, 2013.

Dr. Drummond served as a Ripley County Health Officer and was a member of the American Medical Association, as well as the College of American Pathologist. In his spare time, he enjoyed model trains, collecting stamps, and was an avid reader. Visitation for Dr. Drummond will be held Monday, June 7th, at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles, from 5pm to 7pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 8th, at 11am, at the funeral home. Graveside services will be at 2pm at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in care of the funeral home.

 

Janice Irene Gilpin, 83, of Versailles, Indiana, formerly of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021 at the Waters of Dillsboro.  She was born at Mt. Sinai on February 25, 1937, the daughter of Raymond & Irene Peak.  She was married to Marvin J. Gilpin, Sr. on September 10, 1954 and he preceded her in death on May 13, 2007.  Survivors include her living partner, Gene Hafft; two sons Marvin J. “Jerry” (Natalie) Gilpin of Rifle, Colorado, and Michael (Ann) Gilpin, Lakeland, Georgia, one daughter, Marsha (Jim) Bowker of Augusta, Michigan; one daughter-in-law, Michelle Gilpin of Three Rivers, MI; one sister, Joyce (Standley)Taylor of Versailles; nine grandchildren, Bryan Gilpin, Versailles, Staci Gilpin Trapp, Cincinnati, John Gilpin, Rockport, TX, Olivia Gilpin, Ft. Collins, CO, Jessie Gilpin McClain, MI, Allison Gilpin Crull MI, Emily Gilpin, MI, Marie Dennett MI, Scott Bowker, MI;  nine great grandchildren, Kaidyn Gilpin, Eli Gilpin, Ellie Trapp, Ethan Trapp, Drew McClain, Brayden McClain, Will Dennett, Ava Dennett, Gavin Gilpin Dovey, and two more expected early this summer. Janice went to Versailles High School, married Marvin and was a homemaker and mother.  She loved when the grandchildren visited their home to swim, fish, ride in the golf cart and play.  She loved cooking for the whole family and made the most delectable pies.  She enjoyed doing puzzles and reading magazines.  She was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and had many friends she talked with by phone. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, June 6th at 2pm at the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Marcia Ann Alford, 76, of Beech Grove passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at her home. She was born in Indianapolis on October 25, 1944 the daughter of Herschel and Margaret Bowerly Reese. Survivors include one daughter Jo Ann Brown of Beech Grove; two sons Robert L. (Krista) Alford and Richard J. (Lindsey) Alford both of Pendleton; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; one sister Cynthia Day of Monticello. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Robert. Mrs. Alford worked at Edward’s Drive-In in Indianapolis for over 30 years where she waited on cars with roller skates on. A young man named Jim Alford visited the drive-in and was very persistent on having a date with her. The two were married on Marcia’s 20th birthday on October 25, 1964 and Jim preceded her in death on May 21, 1998. In her spare time Marcia enjoyed visiting the casinos as well as shopping for antiques. Graveside services for Marcia will be held on Tuesday, June 1st at 11am at the Holton Cemetery. Devoted wife, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and longtime community member, Marian Jean (Caldwell) Ellis passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021. She was 89 years old.  Marian was born in Berea, Kentucky, but lived in Hamilton, Ohio from an early age. She graduated from Hanover High School in 1950, where she met and later married her high school sweetheart, Donald Ellis. They attended Miami University together in Oxford, Ohio, where she studied to be a teacher. They made their home in Hamilton and had four children, Donnie, Gary, Marcy and Cheryl.The couple moved to their family farm in Bear Branch, Indiana in 1970, where they were active members of the community for more than 50 years. Marian owned and managed the Bear Branch General Store, served as Pike Township Trustee for several terms, and worked as Activities Director for the Dillsboro/Ross Manor Senior Care and living facilities for which she was ultimately awarded the honor of Activities Director of the Year for the State of Indiana.  Throughout her nearly 65 years of marriage to husband, Donald, they shared many adventures, one of which led to a great love for the Southwest and an eventual move to Santa Fe, New Mexico. While living there for several years, Marian became the manager of a Native American art and jewelry shop known as The Blue Gem, located in the historic La Fonda Hotel. She always reflected fondly on that time in her life, learning and experiencing so much about the different cultures found there. Her friendly personality and ability to engage people, as well as her love of learning and sharing knowledge with others, made her a natural success. Donald and Marian returned home and retired to their farm in the fall of 1983. Marian enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the company of her Jack Russell terriers, and the tranquility of the farm. She loved to share her interests in birdwatching (especially hummingbirds), gardening, nature, cooking and sewing, and tried to impart to all a love of reading and the value of education.  Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, her sons Donald, Jr. and Gary, her parents, Jesse Caldwell and Cecile Durbin, and her son-in-law, Robert Muñoz.  She is survived by her daughters, Marcy Ellis Hahn (Roger) and Cheryl Ellis Muñoz; her Grandchildren, Dawn Ellis, Jesse Muñoz(Ashley), Weston Ellis, Robert “Eli” Muñoz, Ethan Ellis, Annie Muñoz, Amanda Gribbons (James), Morgan “Alex” Hahn, and Garrett Hahn; her Great-Grandchildren, Tyler Hoskins, Derek Hoskins, Lillian Cline, Alice Muñoz, Bobby Muñoz and Sophie Gribbons; as well as several in-laws, cousins and many close family friends.  Funeral services will be held at 6pm, Wednesday, May 19th at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Visitation will also be on Wednesday beginning at 4pm. Graveside services will be on Thursday, May 20th at 11am at the Rose Hill Burial Ground in Hamilton, Ohio. Kenneth (Kenny) D. Wickstrom, 57 of Gurnee, IL, formerly from Versailles, passed away May 2nd at his home. Kenny was born in Annapolis, MD to Charles Sr. and Elaine Mitchell Wickstrom. He graduated from South Ripley High School in 1981 and went on to graduate from Purdue in 1986 with an engineering degree. He went to work in the Chicago area where he met his wife, Dee. They were blessed with two daughters, Nikala Wickstrom and Ellexi Wickstrom Sturgeon (Daniel) whom all survive. He earned his MBA from  DeVry University in 1998. He is also survived by his mother, Elaine (Lynn) Cook of Versailles; one brother  Chuck (Barbette) Wickstrom of Benham. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Wickstrom, Sr., G randparents, Chester and Evelyn Wickstrom and John and Edith Mitchell, and his niece, Alivia Wickstrom Burns, and his step-father George Young. He was a former member of the Indiana Civil Air Patrol. He trained to run in organized races and was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series Hall of Fame. He was currently involved with the Gurnee Park District Basketball Association and was recognized for his volunteering  efforts by NIGFBA. Kenny’s wishes were to be cremated and there will be no services.

 

Betty Ann (Rosengarn) Schebler passed away on Friday, April 23, 2021 at home. Betty wasborn on January 22, 1950, in Milan, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilford and Ethel (Westmeyer) Rosengarn. Surviving her are significant other, James Busteed. Also surviving her are three children, Lisa (David) Baugh of Versailles, Jason (Crystal) Schebler of Milan and Jessica (Ryan) Last of Hebron, Kentucky. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jacob Baugh, Danielle Baugh, Laurinzie Taylor, Trevor Schebler, Carter Last, Liam Last and Arianna Last. Other survivors include brother, Robert (Judy) Rosengarn. Betty graduated Milan High School in 1969. Following graduation, she went to work at Batesville Casket for many years. Betty was a lifelong resident of Ripley County. A celebration of life for Betty will be from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m on Wednesday, April 28 at the Versailles Baptist Church Family Life Center.

 

Lola Mitchell, 90, of Versailles passed away at 3:30am, Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. She was born near Ligon in Floyd County, Kentucky on December 29, 1930 the daughter of Robert and Minnie Belle Henson Newsome. She was married to Howard Mitchell on September 19, 1951 and he preceded her in death on September 5, 2005. Survivors include two daughters Donetta (Jim) Benham of Benham, and Melissa (Kurt) Dunagan of Bright; son-in-law Gene Sharp of Milan; 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Angela Sharp, her sisters Virginia Meade, Earlene Mathews, Annabelle Reed, and Lou Horn, and her brother Town Newsome. Mrs. Mitchell was a 1947 graduate of McDowell High School in McDowell, Kentucky. She was a former employee of Cuzzin Jacks in Versailles. Lola was a member of the Versailles American Legion Auxiliary and was baptized a year ago and became a member of the Shelby Christian Church. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 24th at 10am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Tim Heim officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Gladys Louise Combs, 96, of Osgood passed away at 9pm, Friday, April 9, 2021 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born in Harrison County, Kentucky near Cynthiana on Saturday, May 3, 1924 the daughter of George and Martha Toomey Revel. She was married to James Smart who preceded her in death and on March 16, 1978 she married Arnold Combs who preceded her in death on October 29, 2010. Survivors include one daughter Cathy (Jeff) Volz of Osgood; four step-sons James (Esther) Smart of Cincinnati, Jerry (Rayleen) Smart of Tallahassee, Florida, Jack Smart of Connecticut, and Joe Smart of Cincinnati; two grandchildren Brandon (Laura) Smart and Alicia (Todd) Ault both of Olean; five step-grandchildren Jim, Mary, Judy, Tom, and Dale; six great-grandchildren Elijah, Quinn, and Zechariah Smart, and Trevor, Lucas, and Jayden Ault. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Lula Belle Deouch and Mildred Miller. Mrs. Combs was a homemaker, a former employee of US Shoe in Osgood, and also did in home healthcare. She was a member of the Ripley County Red Hatters, Internationally Yours, and the Ripley County Extension Homemakers. She enjoyed traveling and had visited nearly all 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii as well as the Caribbean and the Bahamas. She also loved to play euchre and enjoyed playing cards at Buckeye Village in Osgood. Louise attended the Versailles Baptist Church and the Osgood United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 15th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery at Cross Plains. Visitation will also be on Thursday beginning at 10am. Memorials may be given to the cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Annette Marie Taylor, 63, of Versailles passed away at 1:05am, Friday, April 9, 2021 at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. She was born in Cleves, Ohio on January 25, 1958 the daughter of Aubrey and Naomi Courtney Garrison. She was married to Joe Taylor on April 20, 1976 and he survives. Other survivors include six sons Joseph, Eugene, and Matthew all of Versailles, Christopher (Samantha) and Eric (Bethany) both of Batesville, and Jason of Cincinnati; two daughters Lori (Henry) Eastwood of Versailles and Angie Taylor of Napoleon; son-in-law Jeffrey Holt of Batesville; 16 grandchildren; three brothers William, Tim, and Dennis Garrison all of Harrison, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Janice Taylor, and her daughter Penny Lynn Holt. Mrs. Taylor was a full time homemaker and Mom. She was a member of the Dabney Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 12pm, Tuesday, April 13th at Dabney with Rev. Mike Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Clara R. Smith, 84, of the Hopewell community passed away at 9:10pm, Thursday, April 8, 2021 at her home. She was born at Forest Hill in Decatur County on November 3, 1936 the daughter of Forest and Artunis Giddings Campbell. She was married to Robert Smith on May 24, 1986 and he survives. Other survivors include one son James (Barbara) Campbell of Indianapolis; three daughters Roxanna Collins of Osgood, Virginia (Rick) Koors of Greensburg, and Bonnie (Tim) Bolt of Holton; her daughter-in-law Connie Hauser of Versailles; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; one sister Thelma Meece of Greensburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, sons David Hilderbrand and Bobby Hauser, her sister Lillian Gibson, and her brothers Clifford, Norman, and Bud Campbell. Mrs. Smith’s working career spanned many years where she was employed at US Shoe in Osgood and also for the Karol Cook Dress Factory in Greensburg. She retired in 2002 from Bonn Aluminum in Greensburg where she worked as a group leader in final inspection. She enjoyed helping Bob on the farm as well as crocheting and was well known in the community as a great seamstress. Clara was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 12th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Clara’s niece Pastor Janet Hodson officiating. James E. Busteed, 82, of Versailles passed away at 7:45am, Sunday, April 4, 2021 at his home. He was born in Milan on October 8, 1938 the son of Thomas and Freida Kinnett Busteed. He was married to Kitty Jones on January 20, 1961 and his wife of 60 years survives. Other survivors include two sons James L. Busteed (Betty Schebler) of Versailles, and Dr. Timothy (Jennie) Busteed of Morehead City, North Carolina; one daughter Tammy Johnson of Bloomington; four grandchildren Mackenzie (Becky) Johnson of Marion, Grayson, Katherine and Nolan Busteed of Morehead City; one great-grandson Cooper Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tom, and his son-in-law Frank Johnson. Mr. Busteed was a 1956 graduate of Versailles High School. He was a 38 year employee of Seagrams in Lawrenceburg where he worked in shipping. Jim was a 60 year member of the Dabney Baptist Church where he served in many capacities. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Memorials may be given to the building fund of the Dabney Baptist Church in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

 

Hester M. Young, 80, of Versailles passed away at 7:50pm, Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. She was born in Little Blue, Missouri on April 26, 1940, the daughter of Roy and Helen Thompson Chapman. Hester graduated from William Chrisman High School. On June 24, 1973, she married her best friend, Howard Young, who preceded her in death on June 8, 2020. Hester was a tax accountant, and logged many hours helping her clients navigate the challenging world of tax returns. In her spare time, she was an active member in the NMLRA, along side her husband. She loved helping at the black powder shoots in Friendship every year. She also enjoyed spending time with “The Ladies”, playing cards and driving them out for lunches. Survivors include four sisters: Hazel Hupman of Sugar Creek, MO, Donna Jackson of Independence, MO, Diane Ford of Seattle, WA, and Helen Mangum of Independence, MO. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Roy and John Chapman, and her sister Hilda Steffens. She will be dearly missed by all those who loved her, including her many friends, neighbors, and family members not listed here, along with her loving Mr. Boots. Hester’s wishes were to be cremated and a celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, April 14 at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Akers Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will also be on Wednesday beginning at 1pm. Tony G. Diem, 65, of Bennington passed away at 8:25am, Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at his home. He was born in Batesville on April 14, 1955 the son of Henry and Alta Robinson Diem. He was married to Shirley Seigle o March 5, 2010 and she survives. Other survivors include on son Alex (Lucii) Diem of Lawrenceburg; two daughters Tara Diem (Brandon Reynolds) and Erin Diem both of Versailles; step-daughter Tiffiany Dodson of Manchester, Tennessee; 12 grandchildren; one brother David (Vicki) Diem of Benham. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Diem was a 1973 graduate of South Ripley High School and was a 35 year employee of Delta Faucet in Greensburg. He enjoyed coon hunting, riding and showing horses, his time at the NMLRA in Friendship, and the companionship of his dog Sheeba. Tony was a member of the Cross Plains Church of Christ and the NMLRA. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 20th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Randy Thieman officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Silhouette Range of the NMLRA in care of the funeral home.

 

Carol Ann Weigand, 79, of Washington, formerly of Lawrenceburg passed away at 7:45am, Friday, March 12, 2021 at the Davies County Hospital in Washington. She was born in Cincinnati on January 18, 1942 the daughter of Milan and Bernice Davis Weigand. Survivors include her brother Jerry Weigand of Lawrenceburg. Carol was disabled and spent part of her childhood in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood east of Versailles. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, March 16th at 10am at the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles in charge of arrangements.

 

Danny E. Creigmile, 76, of Versailles passed away at 12:15am, Friday, March 12, 2021 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born at the Whitlatch Clinic in Milan on September 25, 1944 the son of Donald and Ina Patrick Creigmile. He was married to Thelma Faye Rodgers Winters on December 31, 1994 and she preceded him in death on August 31, 2012. Survivors include one daughter Sherry (Daniel) Bauer of Aurora; two grandchildren Danielle and Matthew Bauer; one brother Kenneth Creigmile of Versailles; two sisters Janet (Dennis) Schwanholt and Donna Nugent both of Versailles. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his son Michael Creigmile. Mr. Creigmile was a 1962 graduate of Versailles High School. He spent his entire working career at Cummins in Columbus, retiring after 37 years in 1999. He enjoyed attending the senior dances at North Vernon and Madison, and also tending to his flowers and feeding the birds and squirrels. His dog Buddy was a loyal companion on many long Kawasaki Mule rides. Danny was a member of the Versailles Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 18th at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Neil Stewart, minister of the Versailles Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will also be on Thursday beginning at 11am. Memorials may be given to the Ripley County Humane Society or the Church of Christ in care of the funeral home.

 

Steven Ray Owens, 70, of Hanover passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the Richwood Nursing Center in LaGrange, Kentucky. He was born in Bedford, Indiana on December 10, 1950 the son of Clarence and Maudie Arthur Owens. He was married to Carol Sue Furlow on June 27, 1991 and she preceded him in death on February 18, 2019. Survivors include one son Paul (Bridgett) Owens of Bedford; one daughter Sarah (Adam) Coleman of North Vernon; two step-sons Chad George of Hanover and Christopher George of Holton; grandchildren Kadesia and Javan Owens, and Luke and Chrisanna Coleman; two step-grandchildren; two brothers Orin Wayne (Sandra) Owens of Springville and Estell Owens of Mitchell;  one sister Barbara (Lonnie) Jones of Bedford. He was also preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Ava Coleman, step-son Justin Dale George, his brother Robert Dale Owens, and his sisters Myrna Jewell and Patricia Owens. Mr. Owens worked for many years as a mechanic for the CSX Railroad, retiring in 1998. Steven was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the Amphibian Engineer Corp from 1971 to 1974. For service to his country Steven received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and was qualified as a sharpshooter. He loved to attend auctions, hunt mushrooms, and was well known in the area as the “fruit and vegetable man.” Steven’s wishes were to be cremated and a graveside service will be held on Monday, March 22nd at 2pm at the New Marion Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Madison American Legion. Memorials may be given to the New Marion Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. 

 

Betty J. Grossman, 93, of Indianapolis, formerly of the Hopewell community passed away at 9:15am, Monday, March 8, 2021 at the home of her grandson in Indianapolis. She was born near Fairland in Shelby County, Indiana on November 20, 1927 the daughter of Ersel and Ila Walton Hoover. She was married to Ernie Grossman on March 20, 1946 and he preceded her in death on November 23, 2003. Survivors include two sons Ronnie Grossman of Holton and Rick (Emily) Grossman of Clay City; two daughters Melody Peugh of Shelbyville and Marcia (Todd) Calhoun of Alexandria, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren; one brother Donnie Hoover of Batesville; one sister Letitia (Bob) Cox of Clinton, Illinois; sister-in-law Rosalie Hoover of Mooresville.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son-in-law Johnnie (Butch) Peugh, her brothers Wayne and Norman Hoover, and her sisters Grace Barhorst and Helen Young. Betty and Ernie were very active in local Republican politics. She was a former Ripley County deputy assessor and had served two terms as Ripley County Recorder. She also had worked in the cafeteria of the Holton School. Betty was known in the community for her musical talents. She could play the guitar, banjo, piano, and the Dobro. Along with playing she was also a wonderful singer and was a founding member of the Ripley County Harmonettes. Betty was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church for over 70 years where she participated in many programs including music and helping with VBS. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 12th at 2pm at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. Ty Choate officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Douglas Allen Estell, 33, of New Marion passed away at 8:30am, Monday, March 8, 2021 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born in Madison on June 9, 1987 the son of Rick Estell and Celestine Walker. Survivors include his father Rick Estell of New Marion; mother Celestine (John) Earl of Charlotte, North Carolina; Doug’s fiancé Angela Ciarrochi; two daughters Cherish and Savannah Cassidy of Versailles; three sons Dominic Cassidy, and Aiden and Blaiz Estell of Versailles; one brother Robert Courtney of Louisville; three sisters Amanda Thompson of Milan, Angie Estell of Madison, and Sarah Fouch of Madison, and a special niece Whitney Stoneking.  Doug was a former employee of Tire Mart in Batesville where he worked as a mechanic. He enjoyed his motorcycles and working with his radio systems. Funeral services will be held at 12pm Thursday, March 11 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Marion L. Fancher, Sr., 84, of Milan passed away at 10:50pm, Saturday, March 6, 2021 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born in Vevay on October 22, 1936 the son of Guy and Katherine Webb Fancher. He was married to Wilma Thomas on July 1, 1967 and his wife of 53 years survives. Other survivors include two sons Marion Jr. (Heather) of Louisiana and Kenny Fancher of Hebron, Kentucky; two daughters Patricia (Steve) Bonapfel of Melbourne, Kentucky and Brenda (Randy) Haines of Loveland, Ohio; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; one brother Bob Hudson of Aurora. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Mr. Fancher was a former employee of Aurora Casket Company. He also was a truck driver for several years driving for Baylor Trucking, TNT Enterprises, and Aikins Trucking in Osgood. He spent 28 years as a loader operator for the Martin-Marietta Quarry in Harrison and went a span of 20 years in which he only missed one day of work. He enjoyed his family and witnessing for the Lord was a priority in his life. Marion was a member of the Hope Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 12th at 11am at the Hope Baptist Church near Dillsboro with Evangelist Phil Gabbard and Pastor John Young officiating. Burial will be in the Craven Cemetery at Milan. Visitation will be on Thursday at the church from 6pm to 8pm and from 10am until time of services Friday. Thomas Noel Gray, 55, of Milan, passed away at 1:35am, Friday, March 5, 2021 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born in Lawrenceburg on November 14, 1965 the son Gene and Marilyn Bales Gray. He married Kathy Brewington on January 4, 1993, and she survives. He was raised in the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship and later attended the Versailles Baptist Church. Tom graduated from South Ripley High School in 1984. He joined the Marines after graduation until 1988 when he began working at Hill-Rom, then later at Valeo. He and his wife Kathy own and operate the Gooseberry Flower Shop in Versailles. Other survivors include sons Thomas (Meghan), Garrett (Bayleigh), and Jacob all of Milan: one daughter Becca Gray of Milan, father and mother-in-law Bob and Jeanette Brewington of Milan; two grandchildren Remington and Peyton; his mother Marilyn (Bales) Hunt of Versailles; special dear friends Annie and Brandon Knueven, three sisters Traci (Dwight) Bauman, Terri (Brian) Benning, and Toni (Winston) Halcomb all of Versailles. He was preceded in death by his father, his grandson Nolan Robert Gray, and brother in law Robert “Bobby” Brewington. Tom was proud of serving in the Marines, loved farming with his sons and father in law, and was a hard core Purdue Boiler Fan. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 9th at 10:30 am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Randy Thieman officiating. Burial will be in the Forrest Hill Cemetery in Moores Hill. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Gary J. Singleton, 63, of Osgood passed away at 3am, Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born in Seymour on April 7, 1957 the son of Luther and Mary Arrowood Singleton. Survivors include three sisters Sandra Biehle of Commiskey, Connie (Norman) Kappes of Osgood, and Pat Schneider of Batesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son John Paul Ackerman, his brothers James, Paul, Allan, and Bill Singleton, and his sister Delores Wright. Gary attended school at Holton, spent several years in Florida, and had also lived in North Vernon. He was a former employee of the Jefferson Proving Ground and Banner Distribution. The past several years he was employed at Schneider’s Scrap Metal in Osgood. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 24th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Jane Hance, age 92, of Rexville, passed away Thursday morning, February 18, 2021, at her residence. She was born January 26, 1929, in Brooksburg, Indiana, a daughter of the late Thomas and Opal Christman Hamilton. She graduated from New Marion High School in 1946 and married John William Hance on December 21, 1948. They were married for 44 years until John’s passing in 1993. They raised 3 loving children, Brenda, William (Bill), and Cathy. She was a strong woman of faith and attended Shelby Christian Church. Jane resided in Rexville for 72 years and owned and operated Hance’s Grocery for 39 years. Those who traveled Highway 421 were always treated with a smile, great conversation, and great sandwiches when stopping in at “the store.  Jane, lovingly known as “Granny”, to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was a fixture in her family’s lives. She was always on the move attending ballgames, horse shows, school functions, birthday parties, and a lot of the time she was just stopping by to visit and to make sure her family was always taken care of and supported. She is fondly remembered by her grandchildren for her many uses of her favorite cure-all vinegar, fishing with cane poles back at the lake, driving lessons in the old jeep, her funny but wise sayings, and most of all her unfailing love and support.  Jane will be missed by her loving daughters: Brenda Hance of Versailles and Cathy Hance of Salem; Daughter-in-law Marilyn (Elliott) Hance of Rexville; Her brother David (Donna) Hamilton of Rexville; 6 grandchildren, Michelle Hance (Cliff) Brock of Brownstown, Sherry Hance (Casey) Bright of Greensburg, Matt (Kristy) Werner of Rexville, Lindsey Hance (Craig) Hostetler of Rexville, Jenna Werner (Eddie) Zeigenbein of Campbellsburg, and Jacob (Ashley) Werner of Rexville; 13 Great grandchildren, Chase and Claire Brock, Payton Bright, Kylie Werner, Kaylee Werner, Kaleb Werner, Trigg and Hayze Hostetler, Elynn and Natalie Zeigenbein, Aubrey Werner, Landon Werner, and Emily Werner; and several nieces. Janice Irene Gilpin, 83, of Versailles, Indiana, formally Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021.  She was born at Mt. Sinai on February 25, 1937, the daughter of Raymond & Irene Peak.  She was married to Marvin J. Gilpin, Sr. on September 10, 1954 and he preceded her in death on May 13, 2007.  Survivors include her living partner, Gene Hafft, two sons, Marvin J. “Jerry” (Natalie) Gilpin of Rifle, Colorado and Michael (Ann) Gilpin, Lakeland, Georgia, one daughter, Marsha (Jim) Bowker of Augusta, Michigan. one daughter-in-law, Michelle Gilpin of Three Rivers, MI, one sister, Joyce (Standley)Taylor of Versailles.  Nine grandchildren, Bryan Gilpin, Versailles, Staci Gilpin Trapp, Cincinnati, OH, John Gilpin, Rockport, TX, Olivia Gilpin, Ft. Collins, CO, Jessie Gilpin McClain, MI, Allison Gilpin Crull MI, Emily Gilpin, MI, Marie Dennett MI, Scott Bowker, MI.  Nine great grandchildren, Kaidyn Gilpin, Eli Gilpin, Ellie Trapp, Ethan Trapp, Drew McClain, Brayden McClain, Will Dennett, Ava Dennett, Gavin Gilpin Dovey and two more expected early summer. Janice went to Versailles High School, married Marvin and was a homemaker and mother.  She loved when the grandchildren visited their home to swim, fish, ride in the golfcart and play.  She loved cooking for the whole family and made the most delectable pies.  She enjoyed doing puzzles and reading magazines.  She was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and had many friends she talked with by phone. Services will be held at the families convenience.

 

Harley M. Roark, 76, of Holton passed away at 4:30am, Monday, February 15, 2021 at his home. He was born near Linefork in Letcher County, Kentucky on September 2, 1944 the son of Lue and Arnie Caudill Roark. He was married to Mildred Hamilton on September 24, 1965 and his wife of 55 years survives. Other survivors include two daughters Glynna (James Stamper) Halcomb of Whitesburg, Kentucky and Susie (Todd) Starkey of Milan; five grandchildren Harley (Charlotte) Halcomb of Linefork, Winston (Toni) Halcomb of Versailles, Matt (Kelsey) McConnell of Deputy, Ashley (Justin) Patrick of Versailles, and Jessica Starkey of Milan; 8 great-grandchildren; four brothers John (Linda) Roark of North Vernon, Joe (Debbie) Roark of Osgood, Jim (Dana) Roark of Holton, and Mark (Teresa) Roark of Linefork; four sisters Bonnie (Bo) Kieffer of Holton, Tina (Jim) Wingate of Canaan, Bonita Halcomb of Linefork, and Martha Hammons of Canaan, along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughters Lisa Roark McConnell, and Janet Roark, and his sisters Lola Wood, Anna Mae Ahaus, Dana Craig, Ola Simon, Eula Sizemore, Thelma Osborne, and Georgia Sparks.  Harley’s working career spanned many years with employment at Rumpke’s in Batesville, the Ripley County Highway Department, and Seever’s Landfill in Milan.He also worked as a lumberjack and had operated a filling station in Holton and also a Phillips 66 station in Vevay. He had on the side worked as a self-employed carpenter, plumber, and mechanic. He immensely enjoyed the closeness of his large family along with hunting, fishing, and a good game of cards. Harley attended the Little Memory Old Regular Baptist Church near Sunman. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 20 at 10am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Randy Thieman officiating. Burial will be in the Little Memory Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 6pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.

 

Glen Bush, 92, of Holton passed away at 1:40am, Monday, February 15, 2021 at the St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon. He was born in Middletown, Ohio on November 12, 1928 the son of William and Dolly Alexandria Bush. He was married to Martha Tyler on March 18, 1951 and she preceded him in death on September 28, 2009. Survivors include five sons Don (Sandra) Bush of Versailles, Glen David (Sheryl) Bush of Indianapolis, William (Joyce) Bush of Holton, Hugh Michael (Patty) Bush of Cross Plains, and Martin (Tammy) Bush of Sunman; one daughter Denise (Rick Smith) Jesse of Holton; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Bill, Kenneth, and Tom Bush. Mr. Bush was a former truck driver and also worked for Consolidated Metals in Cincinnati. He retired from Tousley Bixler Construction Company in Indianapolis. Glen was an accomplished mechanic and was the neighbor who could fix your lawn mower, weed eater, car, or tractor. He specialized in the old Volkswagon beetles and once had a lady in California ship her VW to Holton for Glen to repair. He also enjoyed collecting die caste tractors and cars.

 

Phillip E. Gates, 83, of Olean passed away Sunday, February 14, 2021 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born in Muncie on July 10, 1937 the son of Harold and Florence McDonald Gates. He was married to Sharon Sue Voiles on September 4, 1970 and his wife of 50 year survives. Other survivors include two sons Terry (Ruby) Gates of Denver, Colorado, and Larry Gates of Muncie; one daughter Jill (Kevin) McCutchens of Houston, Texas; two step-sons Tom (Ida) Stark  and Steven (Mary) Stark both of Muncie; one step-daughter Traci (Bob) Haase of Manistee, Michigan; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; one sister Sharon (Wayman) Barlow of Muncie. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-son Russ Stark, and his brother Frank. Mr. Gates worked for Pepsi-Cola in Muncie for 19 years as a bottle manager. Upon he and Sharon’s move to Olean he worked for US Shoe in Osgood and also for Carl Dyer’s Moccasins in Friendship for 17 years. Phil was a master builder and mechanic, having restored 13 Model A Fords over the years and he had also built muzzle loading rifles. Several championships at the NMLRA in Friendship had been won with guns Phil had built. He also enjoyed hunting and trapping. Phil was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship and the NMLRA. Phil’s wishes were to be cremated and their will be no services. The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles is in charge of arrangements.

 

Floyd G. Asche, 84, of Delaware passed away at 6am, Saturday, February 6, 2021 at his home. He was born near Delaware on March 11, 1936 the son of Charles and Esther Raney Asche. He was married to Christina Rose on September 12, 1957 and she preceded him in death on April 12, 2015. Survivors include one son Gayle (Jennifer) Asche of Benham; two daughters Carol (Mark) Owens of Osgood and Barbara (Dana) Hotko of Delaware; eight grandchildren Trevor (Jenny) Asche of Dillsboro, Tyler (Ashley) Asche of Rexville, Adam (Alisha) Eadens and Dylan (Amber) Eadens both of Delaware, Elijah (Kelly) Eadens of Dillsboro, Johnny Owens of Greensburg, Josh (Jessica) Owens of Hamilton, Ohio, and Jeremy (Jessica) Owens of Osgood; 17 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Gerald, Hershel, Clarence, Carl, Leroy, Robert, and Gene Asche, and his sisters Goldie Richter, Clara Felix, and Sylvia Spurr. Mr. Asche was a former employee of INDOT where he worked as an inspector and retired after 40 years with IBEW Local 1393.

 

Zola Mae Sporleder, 95, of Butlerville passed away at 1pm, Thursday, February 4, 2021 at her home. She was born in Moores Hill on August 9, 1925 the daughter of Eber L. and Cora Opal Meehan Stroup. She was married to Elmer Sporleder on December 1, 1946 and he preceded her in death on July 15, 2004. Survivors include one son Joseph (Sandra) Sporleder of Butlerville; three daughters Bonita (Johnny) Hopkins of Indianapolis, Cathy (Dan) Meisberger of Holton, and Pam (Mason) Simmons of North Vernon; two sisters including Mae’s twin Mary Lewellen of Scipio, and Helen Poling of North Vernon; 10 grandchildren Karen (Kelly) Gaskill, Jessica Hopkins, and Ray Hopkins all of Indianapolis, Deanna (Ryan) Erny of Jasper, Adam (Amy) Meisberger of Reva, Virginia, Matthew (Andrea) Meisberger of Holton, Megan (Adam) Jines of Princeton, Jonathan (Dawn) Simmons of Seymour, Adriane Sporleder of Butlerville, and Patrick Sporleder of Salem, MA; 16 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Dorothy Smith and Grace Tomlinson, and her brother Eber Stroup, Jr.  Mrs. Sporleder was a 1943 graduate of Zenas High School. After graduation she went to work for Arvins in Columbus for a few years and then became a homemaker and helped Elmer on the farm. She loved spending time with her family, watching movies, reading, embroidering, and working puzzle books. Mae was a faithful member of the Zenas Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 8th at 10:30am at the Zenas Baptist Church with Pastor Mitch Harrell officiating. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3pm to 5pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 9:30am until time of services Monday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Hospice of South Central Indiana or the Zenas Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.

 

Melba M. Thompson, 84, of Versailles passed away at 1:10am, Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. She was born near Versailles on April 12, 1936 the daughter of Durward and Leona Waters Aikins. She was married to Everett Thompson on June 11, 1955 and he preceded her in death on December 22, 2020. Survivors include one son Kevin (Kay McCammon) of Versailles; one daughter Connie Jo (Jon) Martin of Greensburg; four grandchildren Mandy (Micah) Lohrum of Greensburg, Amber (Terry) Jesse of Lawrenceburg, Andrew Martin of Greensburg, and JoBeth Martin of Cincinnati; five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Charles Aikins and Ray Aikins, and her sisters Ruth Semon and an infant sister Norma. Mrs. Thompson was a 1954 graduate of Versailles High School. In her younger years Melba worked at the Southeastern Indiana REMC in Osgood where she met her future husband. Her main career was with the US Postal Service where she worked at the Versailles Post Office. Her career there spanned over 30 years and she was eventually named postmaster. Melba was a lifelong member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church where she served in several capacities including being the church pianist and organist for over 60 years. She was also a member of the OES chapter 333 for over 50 years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 6th at 11am at the Tanglewood Baptist Church with Rev. Becky Pohle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 5pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and also from 10am until time of services Saturday at the church. Nina Joan Ruble, 88, of Versailles passed away at 4:45am, Monday, February 1, 2021 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. She was born near Versailles on  May 20, 1932 the daughter of Everett and Helen Handlon Hafft. She was married to Raymond  Ruble and he preceded her in death on February 11, 1986. Survivors include two sons Raymond “Peach” (Linda) Ruble, Jr. of Greensburg and Tony (Dionne Spears) Ruble of Moores Hill; five daughters Joyce (Denny Wood) Franklin of Milan, Janet (Mert) Myers of Versailles, Joan Deal of Mishawaka, Sheila Ruble of Indianapolis, and Anita (Ray) Strack of Union, Kentucky; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Corine Ruble of Georgetown, Texas; two brothers Gene (Janice Gilpin) Hafft of Versailles and Ronald Hafft of Bloomington. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Phyllis, her son Mark and her granddaughter Sarah Ruble. Mrs. Ruble attended New Marion High School. She was a former employee of Berkel Electronics in Versailles and retired from Reliance Electric in Madison in 2002. Nina enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, quilting, bowling, and also found time to do babysitting in her home, but her mainstay in life was her family. She cherished her time with them and even with her busy life she found time to make quilts for her grandchildren. Nina was a member of the St. Magdalene Catholic Church in New Marion and upon its closure became a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Madison. James E. Evans, 80, of Versailles passed away at 2:15pm, Thursday, January 14, 2021 at his home. He was born in Batesville on June 4, 1940 the son of Ralph and Mabel Keith Evans. He was married to Arlene Hoeferkamp on August 24, 1958 and his wife of 62 years survives. Other survivors include three daughters Marla Luke of Milan, Kim (Vance) Furnish of Greensburg, and Susan (Duane) Webster of South Bend; 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one brother Ron (Pam) Evans of Seymour. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Evans was a 1958 graduate of Versailles High School. In his early years Jim worked for Elvan Akers at the Shell station in Versailles. He then worked for 38 years as a dispatcher for the Indiana State Police in Versailles, retiring in 2002. Jim was a member of the Bridge of Hope Church. Jim’s wishes were to be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, February 6 at the Bridge of Hope Church with Pastor Doug Norman officiating. Calling for friends will be held an hour prior to the service beginning at 1pm. Memorials may be given to the church’s food pantry, Greves Missionaries, or CEF in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

 

Bessie Phillips, 94, of Versailles, formerly of Delaware passed away at 4pm, Monday, February 1, 2021 at the home of her daughter near Osgood. She was born in West Harrison, Indiana on April 7, 1926 the daughter of Edward and Margretta Bourquein Stokes. She was married to James Phillips and he preceded her in death. Survivors include four daughters Hope Asche of Versailles, Ruth (Mike) Raymer of Anderson, Jamie (Jerry) Gambrel of Crothersville, and Tamie (Bill) Vornheder of Osgood; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Kenneth Beard, daughter Mary Margaret Beard, her sisters Jeanette Heinzelman and Florence Kennett, and her brothers Herman, Rolla, John, and Herbert Stokes. Bessie was a former employee of the Milan Tavern, Milan Furniture Factory, and Mr. Fred’s in Osgood. She enjoyed her garden and tending to her flowers, and would do karaoke when the opportunity presented itself. Bessie attended the Washington Baptist Church and the Delaware United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 4th at 11:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bessie’s son-in-law Jerry Gambrel officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will also be on Thursday beginning at 10:30am. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of the funeral home.

 

Joyce M. Vars, 70, of Versailles, formerly of Billings, Montana, passed away at 7:10am, Friday, January 29, 2021 at the home of her daughter south of Versailles. She was born in Cody, Wyoming on June 14, 1950 the daughter of Robert and Alice Elliott Treat. Survivors include two sons Lance (Melissa) Adamy of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Shane (Heather) Whipple of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one daughter Leanne (Ben) Lengerich of Versailles; two brothers Richard Treat of Dallas, Texas, and Dennis (Katherine) Treat of Billings, Montana; one sister Linda (Lee) Thrasher of Charlotte, North Carolina. Ms. Vars was a 1968 graduate of Billings West High School and attended the York Christian College in York, Nebraska. She worked as a seamstress for Dillard’s Department Store in several locations for many years. Joyce was a member of the Versailles Church of Christ. Joyce’s wishes were to be cremated and services will be held at the convenience of the family.

 

Richard G. Hutter, 86, of Benham passed away at 7am, Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at The Waters of Dillsboro Manor. He was born in Peru, Indiana on November 16, 1934 the son of Arthur and Pauline Bender Hutter. He was married to Luciel Harper on September 1, 1960 and his wife of 60 years survives. Other survivors include one son Robert Rogers of Rancho Mirage, California;  four daughters Faith (Leo) Broerman of Cincinnati, Laura (Lonnie) Jester of Madison, Nancy (Gary) Bradburn of Brookville, and Joyce (Gerald) Steele of Davenport, Florida; 14 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; one brother Paul Hutter of Versailles; three sisters Marian McKittrick of Versailles, and Gertrude Hutter and Clara Goldschmidt both of Ocala, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Richard Paul Hutter, brothers Arthur and Robert Hutter, and his sisters Pauline Hutter and Laura Coldren. Mr. Hutter was a 1953 graduate of Versailles High School. On November 18, 1953 he enlisted in the US Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Richard attained the rank of Sp 3 and served with the 1st Infantry Division. For service to his country Richard received the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal. He was discharged from the service on November 16, 1956. In civilian life he was a truck driver for Glen Morris in Versailles, worked in the machine shop at Cummins in Columbus for 30 years, and retired from Holset in Madison where he worked on the assembly line. Richard enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and travel. He and Luciel’s travels took them to nearly every state in the Continental United States and far from home as the North Pole. Richard was a member of the Concord Wesleyan Church. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 30th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Jerry Vandervort of the Concord Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Visitation will also be on Saturday beginning at 10am. Memorials may be given to the Diabetes Foundation or the Benham Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Erlene K. Meisberger, 87, of Holton passed away at 9:45pm, Thursday, January 14, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She was born in Holton on July 2, 1933 the daughter of Orel J. and Maude Beach Montgomery. She was married to Junior Meisberger on June 18, 1951 and he preceded her in death on December 14, 1990. Survivors include two sons Dan (Cathy) Meisberger of Holton and Darrell (Cathy) Meisberger of Rising Sun; one daughter Debbie Schmaltz of Versailles; 8 grandchildren Deanna (Ryan) Erny of Jasper, Adam (Amy) Meisberger of Reva, Virginia, Matt (Andrea) Meisberger of Holton, Crystal (Alan) Welch, Shannon (Stacey) Schmaltz, and Keith (Beth) Schmaltz all of Versailles, Michelle Meisberger Imel of Greensburg, and Shawn (Miranda) Meisberger of New Castle; 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son-in-law Barry Schmaltz, her sister Maxine Workman, and her brother-in-law Dewey Workman. Mrs. Meisberger was a 1951 graduate of Holton High School. Her working career spanned 40 years having employment with attorney Amos Jackson in Versailles, Vines in Osgood, Muscatatuck State Hospital, and 30 years with US Shoe in Osgood, retiring from there in 1991. Erlene enjoyed reading, sending cards, tending to her plants and garden, cheering for the Cincinnati Reds, and supporting her grandchildren that were playing for the South Ripley Raiders. She also helped with the Holton Jamboree for several years. Erlene always had a smile for everyone and always looked for the good in folks, never meeting a stranger. She was the rock for her family whom she loved very much. She was a lifelong member of the Holton Christian Church where she had served as church treasurer, Sunday school pianist, choir director, Sunday school teacher, greeter, participated in the Mother’s class, and was a stalwart prayer warrior. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 23rd at 12pm at the Holton Christian Church with Pastor Bob McCreary officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will also be at the church on Saturday beginning at 10am. Memorials may be given to the church in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

 

Kristina Mahalia (Asche) Jones, 36, of Holton, IN passed away Sunday, January 10, 2021. She was born in Madison, IN on October 30,1984 and was married to Adam Jones on October 17, 2009 and he survives. She was a 2004 graduate of South Ripley High School and was a very compassionate licensed QMA health care worker who loved caring for the elderly; formerly employed at Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood and Aspen Place in Greensburg.  Kristina loved planting flowers in her garden, making crafts, being in nature collecting rocks, arrowheads, ginseng, and mushrooms.  She was a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and niece. Most of all her kids meant the world to her and she loved them dearly.  Kristina was a member of the Dabney Baptist Church and also attended the Holton Christian Church and the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church.  Others surviving are her daughter Lilly Mahalia Jones; her son Jaxen Travis Marshall Jones; her father Alois (Tina) Asche of Holton and her mother Ella (Bill) Meyer of Batesville; her brother Dustin (Sarah) Asche of Holton; sister Heather (Jon) Humphries of Versailles; step-brothers Dustin, Eric (Tiffany), and Derrick Wade, and Jeremy (Kim) Back; father-in-law Marty Jones, brother-in-law Tom (Jamie) Jones, sisters-in-law Kelly (Joel) Carter, Jenny (Trevor) Asche, nieces and nephews Autumn, Layla, Kaiden, Kali, Konnor, Kaiya, Audrey, Hunter, Bryce, Allie, Evelyn, Grady, Dylan, Brayden, Kylie, Landen, Blake, Preston, and Brigham; uncles and aunts Jerry (Dosha) Asche of Holton, Sue (Omar) Bradley of Holton, Bobbie Poynter of Barboursville, Kentucky, and Eva (Jeff) Byard of Versailles and many, many cousins who she loved. Leroy Comer of Osgood and his late wife Louise were Kristina’s adopted grandparents. She was preceded in death by her sister Holly Laverne Asche, grandparents Fred and Alta (Geisler) Asche, Gilbert and Loretta (Jones) Goodall, aunt Carol (Goodall) Isaacs, uncle Gilbert Goodall Jr., and mother-in-law Paula (Hicks) Jones.

 

David Cizek, 50, of Versailles passed away at 5:40pm, Sunday, January 10, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital in Lawrenceburg. He was born in Chicago on June 8, 1970 the son of Norman and Florence Nicosia Cizek. Survivors include step-sisters Marge Martin of Versailles and Lucy Halvorsen of Huntley, Illinois; his nieces Debi Pavey of Dillsboro and Anna Stoeberl of Carol Stream, Illinois; also 8 great-nieces and nephews; he was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Cizek was attended Proviso West High School in Hillside, Illinois. David was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears and enjoyed doing puzzles and coloring. He was a resident of the Waters at Dillsboro and loved the staff and living there. David’s wishes were to be cremated and there will be no services. George Thomas Poole, 83, of Moores Hill, was called home to his creator and was reunited with his beloved wife of 50 years, Kay Poole, on January 12, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital in Lawrenceburg, IN. George was born in Ripley, Ohio, on September 30, 1937. He is the son of Mike and Mable (Howell) Poole. George married Kay Jett on November 14, 1964, in Ripley, Ohio. Kay preceded him in death on January 10, 2015. Survivors include one son, Derek Poole and his wife, Lindsay Poole, of Redondo Beach, California, his two grandchildren, Quincy Kay and Walker Joseph, one brother, Marion Poole, of Ripley, Ohio, and various nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and half-siblings.Mr. Poole was a 1955 graduate of Ripley High School, and he served his country in the Marines from 1955-1959. He was a retired Model Maker/Designer for Hill-Rom for 29 years and owner-operator of Accu-Form Plastics for 25 years. George loved spending time with his grandkids in person, either in Indiana or California, and seeing them on FaceTime as much as possible! When he wasn't with family, he enjoyed spending time with his loving and loyal friends and was an active member of the Moores Hill Church of Christ. George filled his time watching high school basketball/football, taking care of his land and animals, cooking barbecue, and making funnel cakes for the community.  George was one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed in his close-knit community. George’s wishes were to be cremated and there will be no services at this time. The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles is in charge of arrangements.

 

Kenneth J. Clemons, 84, of Versailles passed away at 9:40am, Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born near Madison on February 24, 1936 the son of Elbert and Frances Jackson Clemons. He was married to Jean Holman on June 21, 1971 and she preceded him in death on December 30, 2011. Survivors include one son Bob (Courtney) Clemons of Osgood; one daughter Mary Frances (Robert) Creazzo of Fountaintown. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Clemons was a 1954 graduate of Vevay High School and was an Army veteran. He was a former mail carrier in Vevay and for several years he and Jean delivered the Indianapolis Star and News in the Versailles area. Kenny was a former columnist for the Versailles Republican with his weekly sports column Splinters and for several years was the driver examiner for the local BMV branch. He was also a former little league coach in Versailles and was active in local Republican politics. Kenny was a member of the Versailles Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 15th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home with Randy Thieman officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will also be on Friday beginning at 10am. Memorials may be given to the Activities Fund at the Manderley Health Care Center in care of the funeral home.

 

Charles E. Baurley, 77, of Versailles passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born at home near Rexville on  March 19, 1943 the son of William and Eva Gigerich Baurley. He was married to Lynn Geisler on October 14, 1967 and his wife of 53 years survives. Other survivors include three daughters Tammy (Chris) Linville of Osgood, Amy (Edward) Rodriguez, and Lisa Baurley both of Versailles; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers Robert (Bernie) Baurley of Versailles and Ray (Linda) Baurley of Milan; one sister Doris (Ed) Korte of Clarksville; his mother-in-law Joan Geisler of Versailles. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son John, brother George, and his sister Carol Ann Baurley. Mr. Baurley was a 1961 graduate of New Marion High School. He received his BS degree in education from Hanover College in 1965 and his Masters Degree from Indiana University in 1969. He began his teaching career at New Marion High School where he taught for one year and coached basketball. He then spent the next 39 years teaching business at South Ripley and in the early years did some junior varsity coaching as well. For most of the community he was simply “Mr. Baurley”, a very respected member of the teaching community. After school, he enjoyed his farm and his cattle and always found time for his favorite hobbies of fishing and hunting. Charles was a lifelong member of the St. Magdalene Catholic Church in New Marion and upon its closing became a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Madison. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am, Thursday, January 14th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Madison. Burial will be in the St. Magdalene Cemetery in Madison. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the St. Magdalene Cemetery or the South Ripley Classroom Teachers Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.

 

Robert H. “Barney” Bales, 72, of Friendship passed away at 7:45pm, Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born at the Whitlatch Clinic in Milan on August 2, 1948 the son of Charles and Geneva McClain Bales. Survivors include two sisters Marilyn Hunt of Versailles and Kathern Meyer of Sunman along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his great-great nephew Nolan Gray, and his brothers-in-law Gene Gray and Jerry Meyer. Barney was in the last graduating class of Cross Plains High School in 1966. He enlisted in the US Navy on December 7, 1967 and served on the USS Northampton. He received the National Defense Service Medal for his military service and was discharged on October 1, 1969. He was a former resident of Goodlettsville, Tennessee where he worked in the Tappan factory. When he returned to Ripley County he worked as district one foreman with the Ripley County Highway Department. On the weekends he enjoyed working with and setting up for the Centerline Band. Barney was a former member of the Friendship Fire Department. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 8th at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the Friendship Fire Department in care of the funeral home.

 

Dale Bell, 90, of Versailles passed away at 2:20am, Friday, January 1, 2021 at Thornton Terrace in Hanover. She was born at Cody in Knott County, Kentucky on August 9, 1930 the daughter of Harrison and Raney Blair Francis. She was married to Robert Bell on September 2, 1950 and he preceded her in death on March 16, 1984. Survivors include one son Ron (Sherrie) Bell of Taswell; one daughter Charlotte (Jeff) Logman of Versailles; 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; one brother Harrison (Alice) Francis, Jr. of Marion. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Coy, Hastel, Hubert, and Hobart Francis, and her sisters Donna Disney and Betty Francis. Mrs. Bell was a 1948 graduate of Milan High School and also attended beautician’s school in Columbus. Dale was a former employee of Seagram’s in Lawrenceburg and the Cross Plains State Bank. For several years she owned and operated Dale’s Beauty Shop in Cross Plains and also Dale’s Floral Designs. She also worked at the Versailles Super-Valu which she retired from in 1986. Dale enjoyed tending to her flowers and gardening. She founded Reaching Our Community’s Kids (ROCK) and for several years hosted Bible studies in her home. She was also active with the Good News Clubs through the South Ripley Elementary School. Dale was a member of the Cross Plains United Methodist Church where she taught Bible School, sang in the choir, and sponsored the MYF. Dale attended the Hope Baptist Church at Dillsboro and also the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 6th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with pastor Mark Zerkel of the Tyson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery at Cross Plains. Visitation will also be on Wednesday beginning at 10am. Memorials may be given to the Good News Clubs (CEF) in care of the funeral home.
