Spam not in a can

G-Lock SpamCombat is a new Spam Filter you can download for free. I've been useing it a few days now and I am well pleased. I receive about 100 emails a day and it filters out most of the unwanted ones. It takes some setting up, so be prepaired to do some reading. The longer you use it the better job it will do. If you get very little Spam this program may not be for you. For me it is a God sent.

Google does it again

These items are from the latest GoogleFriends newsletter (hosted through Yahoo!'s online groups). Enjoy!

Google does lots of little tricks. You probably know already that you can enter ticker symbols to get links to stock quotes, street addresses to get links to maps, and numeric expressions to use Google as a calculator. Here are a few new features that you might not have tried yet.

Area Codes
With the proliferation of U.S. area codes, it's not easy to figure out who's calling from where these days. Now you can enter a 3-digit U.S. area code into any Google search box for a link to a map of that area code's location.
Example: http://www.google.com/search?q=650

Universal Product Codes (UPC)
Is your checkout scanner on the fritz? Find out more about a product by entering its UPC code into the Google search box. The UPC code is the number on the bottom of the zebra-striped bar code displayed on most product packages.
Example: http://www.google.com/search?q=073333531084

Flight tracking
Attention, travelers (and those picking you up): find the status of a U.S. flight without delay. Just type a flight number into the Google search box (for example, USAir 50) to see a direct link to that flight's status information.
Example: http://www.google.com/search?q=usair+50

Vehicle ID (VIN) numbers
Want to learn a little more about that car you're about to buy? Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), then type it into Google for a link to a page with more information about the year, make and model of a specific car.

Package tracker
Eager to find out what happened to that fruitcake you ordered last December? Enter a tracking number for any package from UPS, Federal Express, or the U.S. Postal Service in any Google search box and you'll see a direct link to information about the delivery status of that package.

More Backup Stuff

If you have computer that you use for business it is a must to keep backups of your files. If you are just a person that uses a computer for fun it is not as important but you will feel awful when you loose all the address in your mail program. You will also loose everything else like My Documents. Let me put it this way, If your computer was stolen think about what you would loose.

The big mistake that almost everyone is guilty of is misplacing the CDs that comes with a new computer. I can’t stress this point enough. You must put these disks where you can find them. A good place is in a zip lock bag taped inside the case of your computer.

The best way to make backups is to put them on a second hard drive. You can now buy a hard drive that will hold all your for as little as fifty dollars. You get a book that will tell you how to install it yourself. Or you can have a shop install it.

Another way is buy a read/write CD ROM. You can spend about fifty dollars at Wall-Mart for a good one or you can buy a DVD writer for about one hundred dollars. Most will not need the DVD drive unless you plan on doing movies or huge amounts of music files.

Learn how to use these drives. I find that people that have the hardware to do backups never use it. If you don’t know how, ask. There are lots of programs you can buy that will do it for you.

Just last week I received a call from a business, the poor guy had no drivers or had never backed up any of their data. I was able to reload the operating system so the data could be recovered but the drivers were another story. The complete time to get this computer back to almost like it was before the crash was two afternoons. Think about the cost. It would have only taken about two or three hours if he had the drivers and data stored on a second hard drive or on CDs.

Don’t wait till it is to late. Do it now.

If you do DVDs

If you do DVDs here is a good buy. 100 for 100 dollars and if your not in a hurry there is free shipping.
