Another Free Back Up Program

Up-Date: This program is not good if you are on a dial-up
Get a friend on broadband to download it and burn you a CD.
I am now trying it and like it very much. It is just a little slow, this is the only gripe I have with it. Consider buying another hard drive, either external or internal. You can now purchase a USB hard drive & case for under $100 if you shop smart.

"Memeo"
Protects Your Digital Files.
This is a highly recommended program that I have downloaded but not yet tried. It comes from a company that will not imbed unwanted programs on your computer. If you do not have a planin place for making backups already, please download and use this. Please let me know how you like it. It is over 12 Meg. so if you are on a dial-up make time for it to complete.
Read more about and download it from here:

This is a free program.

Q.

I know you do the Stratton – Karsteter Funeral Home Web Page, so I’m sure you can tell me why the obituary page will not show me the up to date information. I know it is showing me old information because my neighbor’s computer shows newer pages than mine. How can I fix this?

A:

Internet Explorer

Up top in the pull-down menus (File, Edit, Tools etc.), click 'Tools', then 'Internet Options'

This brings up a dialog with 6 tabs across the top (General, Security,
Content, .......)

Click 'General', the look for 'Temporary Internet Files'

Click 'Delete Files', then (if it prompts you to do so, check 'Delete all offline
content') then click 'OK'.

Click 'OK' again and this should clear all cached pages.

Netscape

Netscape 7 users:

Up top in the pull-down menus (File, Edit, etc.), click Edit,
then 'Preferences'.

Click History and then 'Clear History'

Click 'OK'

Older versions of Netscape & FireFox V1.0:

From the pull-down menus (File, Edit, etc.), click Edit,
then 'Preferences'.

Find 'Advanced'. Click the + sign in front of the word, 'advanced'.

You'll see 'Cache, Proxies, etc.........'

Click 'Cache'

On the right you'll see, buttons labeled 'Clear Memory Cache' and 'Clear
Disk Cache'

First, click 'Clear Memory Cache' when the '?' dialog appears click 'OK'

Then click 'Clear Disk Cache', when the '?' dialog appears, click 'OK'.

Click 'OK' again to close the Cache Dialog box.

Click 'OK' again and this should clear all cached pages.

AOL

AOL 7.0 users:

Click on the 'Settings' menu then click Internet WWW Properties

Look for the 'Temporary Internet Files'

Click 'Delete Files', then click 'OK'.;

Older versions of AOL:

From the 'My AOL' menu, on the AOL toolbar,

Click 'Preferences', Then Click 'WWW'

Look for the 'Temporary Internet Files'

Click 'Delete Files', then click 'OK'.;

Click 'OK' again and this should clear all cached pages.

What's in a name

Q.
I want to sell my old computer, I have removed all the things that were personal, but now I would like to remove my name and perhaps put the buyer's name on it. How can this be done?

A.
You can change the registration information in Windows XP by editing the registry. Make a backup first, then,

  • Click Start and click Run.
  • Type regedit and click OK.
  • Expand the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
  • In the right pane, double click RegisteredOrganization.
  • Type in the new organization name and click OK.
  • Double click RegisteredOwner.
  • Type in the new name of the registered owner and click OK.
  • Close the Registry Editor.
  • Reboot.

Restore disks, We don't need any stink'in restore disks

It makes no difference what the brand, it may have been a Gateway, a Dell, E-machine, or custom built, they all or should have come with a few CDs that we call restore disks. There may be one or more. Most, not all, lose these CDs, misplacing them is a grave mistake. When, not if, the major malfunction comes you are out of luck without these CDs. To replace a Dell restore CD you must dig down in your pocket to the tune of $35.00 or so, plus wait for the postman to bring it to you.

All of the big computer sales companies are cloning the OS to a hidden partition on your computers hard drive. Why ? to save a few cents. When you have a crash what do you do? Call customer service. The person in India will tell you to put the restore CD in the drive, and then restart the computer. Now in about ½ hour you are up and running again. The friendly customer service fellow hung up the phone 25 minutes ago. This saves a lot of money for the big computer sales boys, The customer service person did not have to know anything about computers, he only had to speak a small amount of English (sort-of) so he could tell you to insert the CD and restart.

What’s so bad about this you say, you loose all information that you have added to the computer since you turned it on for the first time. You lost your address book, my documents, all the nice photos that you cherish so much, yes its all gone forever.

This is why you must have a backup of the files. I’m not going to strum the harp on this as I have spent way too much ink in the past on backing up your files.

Now, where do I come into this picture? I make my living fixing computers for people that have lost the CDs I spoke of above. Most times I can save your files and photos also, but at a cost. It is a time consuming thing to perform, time is money.

So keep throwing these CDs away and never back up those files just so I can keep food on the table. Oh I forgot, my wife needs a new dress also.
